Roosevelt Homes
Established in 1951 as federally funded Low Income Public Housing, this 23-acre property on Ames Avenue is home to 547 residents. Unfortunately, the property faced challenges with periodic flooding, which particularly impacts their playground, parking spaces, and maintenance facility.
Ramsey-Washington prioritized reducing flooding in the area, completing projects at a nearby school and the Eastside Boys and Girls Club before beginning improvements at Roosevelt Homes in 2023. The primary flooding sources were runoff from nearby Ames Avenue, lack of drainage onsite, and stormwater system infrastructure.
Improvements:
- Two infiltration basin rain gardens that expand onsite flood storage by 275 cubic yards
- Infrastructure improvements that include better drainage for the parking lot near the maintenance facility
- Grading adjustments to lower water levels and prevent building flooding
- Modifications on Jessamine Lane to redirect water flow
- Over 1 acre of turf grass converted to native prairie
