Maplewood Middle School

Three large rain gardens filter runoff and protect water quality in Kohlman Creek.

Maplewood Middle School is the largest of six school rain garden projects funded in part by a $150,000 Clean Water Fund grant. Our goal was to manage rainwater runoff at schools in priority areas of the watershed while engaging local communities in a shared learning experience. For this project, we installed one rain garden at the road entry to the school’s north entrance and two adjoining large rain gardens at the south end of their east parking lot. This project provides needed pollinator habitat and reduces the volume of polluted runoff that drains into Kohlman Creek.
