Permeable Pavement

What is Permeable Pavement?

Permeable pavement is a type of paving that allows stormwater and melting snow to pass through and infiltrate into the ground. There are different types of permeable pavement, including porous asphalt, pervious concrete, and interlocking pavers. They are often used for driveways, sidewalks, patios, parking lots, and low-speed roadways.

What are the Benefits?

  • Reduces runoff by allowing water to be absorbed into the soil
  • Minimizes local flooding
  • Helps filter out pollutants
  • Reduces the need for road salt, a common pollutant that harms our waterbodies
  • Lower construction and maintenance costs than conventional drainage systems
  • Porous asphalt and pervious concrete have rougher surfaces, providing more traction for pedestrians and vehicles

Project Funding

RWMWD offers funding for 50-100% of permeable pavement project costs for eligible projects through our Stewardship Grants program.
